NUTS

Ok so the new day care is not working out according to plan. I've only been a mommy now for 15 months but basic child care 101 taught me that little one are NOT to have peanut butter until the age of 2 and some doctors even go as far as age 3. So I was quite shocked today when I received a call from day care telling me that Sophia had a PB&J sandwich for a snack and soon thereafter started projectile vomiting and developed red splotches all over her face. So once again...of to the ER we go. Every thing is fine now. Her breathing wasn't affected. She received a steroid shot and doc watched her for a few hours and then we were sent on our way...with instructions to stay away from PB!

So I'm pretty steamed. Her teacher even commented that "she asked me if Sophie was allergic to anything and I had told her no." Well how in the world am I suppose to know that she's allergic to something if she's never had it. AND I seriously did not think that I had to tell them that PB was off limits because never in a million years would I have dreamed that a day care would serve it to 1 year olds!! PB is even banned in some school districts around here!

So unfortunately it may be back to the drawing board. I'm definitely going to talk to the director tomorrow. Already in 2 days there's a few things that I'm not happy about. I'm serious...the whole day care thing has just about pushed me over the edge! But I'm trying to think happy thoughts and this picture with Little Bit and her "If Your Happy and You Know It Monkey" makes me happy. You should hear her try to scream AMEN on the Amen verse.

oh my goodness. i had never heard of waiting until 2 or 3, everything i read said wait until they were 1...but like you said, in the school/daycare system you have to be extremely careful. we try not to have any type of nuts in our lunches..

daycare can be so annoying and my favorite is how they do something and then act like, oh it was no big deal.
well, you better keep sophie away from your better n peanut butter. it is on it's way to you!

Wow. As a director of a preschool, I'm on your side. You are absolutely right- no pb until age 2, and then not at daycare until the parents have introduced it at home first. I'm sure the doctor told you, but be sure to have benedryl and an epi pen kept at her daycare just in case! just touching pb can cause a reaction!

Ok, my pediatrician said age 1 unless there's a history of an allergy. Ooops. Bad mommy, my kids eat it off the spoon!

Oh, I so hope that Sophie doesn't have a peanut allergy! But if she does at least it sounds like it's not too serious. Good luck with the daycare situation! Have you looked for an in-home sitter? I just saw one advertising in Hurricane looking for kiddos to watch in her home. I'll keep my ears open for you.

Oh no! I know my niece has a little boy in her second grade class that is so allergic to peanuts that the entire class is forbidden to have peanuts/peanut butter in the classroom. That is way to risky an allergy for the day care to go all willy nilly with it. Will they be serving her shrimp cocktail today? Good luck day care shopping!

I had always heard 1 as well, but in this age of crazy peanut butter allergies, they should not serve PB at daycare period unless they are SURE that every child has been introduced to it at home. They should not have taken that chance!! I would be angry too, and I wish you luck on your search for daycare.

Our pediatrician also said one, but that was with the knowledge that there is absolutely no history of food allergies in our family. Jonathan also eats it off the spoon! The only time the age matters is if there IS a reaction, which is exactly WHY it should be the parents' decision and not the daycare.

Jonathan's daycare is wonderful and I feel pretty fortunate that it is after hearing your stories and those of others. His is a peanut free school which I totally support. I totally hate that you are back to the drawing board already, but it's better early, I think, before she gets all settled in!

I hope that Sophie does not have a peanut allergy, either, but hopefully it's not too bad of one if she does. I am so sorry for you to have to go through this frustration!!

I had always heard 1 for PB, too, but whether it's 1 or 2 or 3, a daycare shouldn't be serving something that is a fairly common and serious allergant (or whatever that word is). I'm so sorry the move hasn't worked out. I hope you find the right fit this time!

Oh, Kim, I know so many good day cares/pre-school - I used to teach in an Accreditated Pre-school - no PB's at all. I have young, conservative doctor and was told not to give the kids PB until 2yrs. Anyway, you're right. You wouldn't know what Sophie's allergic to if she's not had it.

I will keep my fingers crossed that you find one that works for you and Sophie!
